Sounding a conical wind instrument by self activaction

This past April, much to my joy and excitement, Direction was screened at the PFA in Berkeley. After the showing and Q&A, I was approached by Michael Guillen to answer a couple questions and talk a bit about the process of making the film. Apparently this qualifies as an Interview. Definitely a first. You can read my arrogance at his film blog, The Evening Class.

Vacationing on the NyQuil islands

That’s right, I’m fighting through a horrible vicious cold. I can barely muster the energy to plop this post onto the interweb. Yet, there’s something peculiar about being sick this time around. No it’s not the new colors my body can generate, or the fact that I keep seeing people come in that aren’t here. For some bizarre reason, I’m having the time of my life. (more…)

“Escape from Aztlan” finished

First there was National Novel Writing Month, and now I finished my first feature length for April’s ‘Script Frenzy‘ marathon. I think this is actually a story I can really get behind and make. I’ll be going through a couple rewrites and maybe rework some things. I’d like to first create a comic-book/storyboard version, that way I can better visualize the story. Things are getting exciting, let’s see where it goes. Woo!!

Star Trek II - The wrath of Khan

In anticipation of this summers new Star Trek offering by Lost creator J.J. Abrams, I’ve been going back and trying to get into this cult series. ‘Why’ you say? Clearly because I have nothing better to do than not only be a geek, but a faux-geek trying to penetrate the seedy geek underworld. The first film was just like a Dodger Dog. Long and boring. The second, while better, doesn’t do much to raise my hopes. (more…)

2008 Thai New Year - Songkran festival

Preparing for our summer honeymoon/vacation in Thailand, Me and Rach went to the annual Thai New Year festival in the Thaitown area of Hollywood this Sunday. The event, apparently sponsored by every asian beer company every past and present, was very full, exciting and surprisingly comfortable despite the blazing heat. (more…)

R.I.P. Charlton Heston

I first knew of Charlton Heston when my brother got me into the whole Planet of the Apes series. Despite his ‘acting’ I found Charlton Heston’s technique to be quite interesting. It was like all the William Shatner jokes, except without the self-deprecating nature. Heston had a weird robotic conviction behind his words. Years later and viewings of Spartacus, the 10 commandments, The Naked Jungle, The Omega Man and many other great movies, I could really appreciate Heston’s distinctive persona.

Later as I hear about his personal views and ideas, I sit a bit more uncomfortable, but still appreciate. I’ve never seen why a person’s personal views (screwing your adopted daughter, beating your wife) has anything to do with your work. Be it acting or making a sandwich.

Heston was a great actor who took his craft extremely serious. Whatever happens here forward, his style of acting will probably never be seen again.

(EDIT: In retrospect, it was Kirk Douglas who played Spartacus, I think Heston played Michaelangelo, which was also a slave in his own way, except not)

Arrested Development, The Office and Christopher Guest rolled into one.

Some very amazing people are working on a film as we speak (I think). I’m not going to complicate matters with things like ‘details’ and ‘ideas’, but only throw in what is important. The film is called “This side of truth“, and takes place on an alternate earth where no one can lie. Now for the roll call.

Ricky Gervais - Boss from ‘The Office (UK)’ (Writer/Director/Actor)

Starring
Jennifer Garner (Juno)
Jonah Hill (Loud fat co-star of Superbad)
Christopher Guest (Everything awesome)
Tina Fey (SNL)
Jeffrey Tambor, Jason Bateman (Arrested Development)

It can’t fail, it better not.

Script Frenzy

A few month’s ago, I joined in the fricassee of the National Novel Writing Month and managed to sweat out a very satisfying little book. I got to work a bit on my writing chops and learned a good deal from the others on the site’s forum. Yet, the thing that stuck with me most is how well I work under a deadline, even if it’s “just for fun”.

As such, I jump back into the fray for April’s Script Frenzy screen writing event. (more…)

Podcast #7 - Stereo Nonsense

Absolutely no direction to this one. Just a couple friends hanging out and two microphones in the room. Random songs were added to the list and random things were said in between. There is no theme, cohesion or reason for a podcast like this to exist. Enjoy..

What I learned from teaching

When I first started as a substitute teacher, I was horrified. I was covering a stereotypical inner city high school with a bunch of jaded students. Amazingly, one year later, I can walk into any classroom and hold it down for the two hour period. The following is a brief list of the tricks and tips I’ve learned which allow me to keep the room from falling apart. (more…)

Santa Fe Springs Swap Meet

You wake up sleepily on a Saturday morning and feel like getting the day started right. It’s too early for the beach and too late for a morning hike. You’re somewhere in LA and have $3-$10 at your disposal. How’s about a Swap Meet. You think of Cypress, too far, Rose Bowl, only once a month. Let me help you out. Get on the 5 freeway and exit Alondra. Pay your $.75 entry fee, grab yourself a beer and come see the wonder that is the Santa Fe Springs Swap meet. (more…)
